In the policy paper 'Pronto Justice' written by our editor, it is argued that the war against HIV/Aids in South Africa is being lost. It is being lost primarily because state and non-state actors within the country are actively campaigning against the nationwide distribution of condoms and ARV medication. The two medical options which would significantly reduce the risk of infection of the HIV/Aids virus and increase the standard of living and life expectancy of those already infected. In the paper it is suggested that such policies are criminal. That faith and ignorance are unsatisfactory defences of actions and inactions which lead directly to countless numbers of preventable deaths. As such, the negligent approach of the Roman Catholic Church and the South African government toward the prevention and treatment of the virus should be considered as ‘crimes against humanity’.
